Why you need it on the job
Assuming a circuit is dead is the single most common cause of electrical fatalities. The permit makes isolation, locking off and proving dead into recorded steps with a named issuer, so nobody re-energises a circuit while someone still has their hands on it.

Frequently asked questions
What does proving dead actually mean?
Testing the conductors with an approved voltage indicator, then proving that indicator still works on a known live source or proving unit immediately afterwards.
Who can issue an electrical permit?
Only a competent person authorised in writing for that installation, who understands the system and can control the isolation from start to hand-back.
