The Roof Light That Would Not Take His Weight
A worker walked across an industrial roof to reach a repair and stepped onto a fragile rooflight hidden under moss. It gave way instantly.
He was saved by a harness clipped to a running line that had been installed only weeks before as part of a wider access upgrade. Without it, the fall would have been from height onto a hard floor below. The fragile panels were not marked and looked identical to the surrounding roof.
The lesson
Fragile surfaces must be identified, marked and either covered or bypassed with proper access. Where fall-arrest is used, the anchor and running line must meet EN 795 and be inspected, and a rescue plan must exist before anyone goes up.
