Roll-Over Protective Structures (ROPS)

ISO 3471 specifies the laboratory tests and performance requirements for roll-over protective structures fitted to earth-moving and agricultural machines. A structure meeting it is designed to deform in a controlled way during an overturn while preserving a defined survival space around a seated, belted operator.

Scope

ISO 3471 applies to roll-over protective structures on machines including tractors and earth-moving equipment. It defines the deflection-limiting volume representing the space that must remain clear around the operator, the sequence of loads applied to the structure, and the energy the structure must absorb without intruding into that volume.

Exclusions & Related Standards

  • Protection against falling objects is a separate function assessed under its own requirements.
  • The seat belt is a separate component, and the structure provides very little protection without one worn.
  • General agricultural machinery guarding falls under EN ISO 4254.
  • Cab protection against hazardous substances falls under EN 15695.

Key Requirements & Marking

The structure must withstand a defined sequence of lateral, vertical and longitudinal loads, absorbing a specified amount of energy related to the mass of the machine, without any part of the structure entering the deflection-limiting volume. That volume represents the space a seated and belted operator occupies, which is why the protection depends entirely on the operator being restrained within it.

Testing Overview

Testing is carried out on a representative structure mounted as it would be in service. Loads are applied in a defined sequence to the side, the top and the rear, with the force and absorbed energy recorded, and the structure must not intrude into the deflection-limiting volume at any point during or after the tests.

Selection Guide

A structure is approved for the specific machine model and mass it was tested with, so a structure from another machine is not a substitute. Where a folding structure is fitted, consider whether the work genuinely requires folding, since a folded structure provides no protection and is frequently left down after the low clearance has been passed.

Inspection, Care and Maintenance

  • Never drill, cut, weld or heat a protective structure, including for lights or brackets, as this changes how it deforms
  • Replace rather than repair a structure that has been damaged or has been through an overturn, however sound it appears
  • Check mounting bolts are the specified type and correctly torqued, since the mounting is part of the tested assembly
  • Return a folding structure to its raised position immediately after passing a low clearance
  • Inspect and maintain the seat belt as part of the structure, because the two only work together
