The Dust You Could Not See Was the Problem
A team cut concrete blocks indoors for a full shift using a dry saw and no extraction. The visible dust settled within minutes, so it felt harmless. The dangerous fraction never settled at all.
Respirable crystalline silica is small enough to stay airborne and to reach deep into the lungs, where it causes irreversible damage over time. Because the harm is slow, there was no dramatic moment to react to, which is exactly what makes it so easy to under-protect against.
The lesson
Silica exposure is controlled first by cutting wet or using on-tool extraction, and only then by respiratory protection selected for the exposure level. A correctly fitted respirator meeting EN 149 is the last line of defence, not the first, and it only works if it seals to the wearer.
